Lecture by Frederick Downs Jr.
AL Campus Event !!!
The Alexandria Honors program and the Lyceum committee are honored to be hosting veteran and author Frederick Downs. Jr.
Frederick Downs Jr. is a veteran and the retired national director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. He served with distinction in Vietnam as a combat platoon leader. Because of his service in Vietnam he earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” Device for valor, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and four Purple Hearts.
In addition to having appeared on numerous television shows, Frederick Downs Jr. is also the author of three books, The Killing Zone: My Life in the Vietnam War; Aftermath: A Soldier’s Return from Vietnam and No Longer Enemies, Not Yet Friends: An American Soldier Returns to Vietnam. All are invited!

The NOVA Alexandria Band to play Halloween concert
AL Campus Event !!!
Admission: Free
Audience Members are encouraged to dress in Halloween Costumes for Prizes!!!!!!!
Spend a night listening to frighteningly good music at the 2014 “Spooktacular Sounds in the Haunted Hall: A Halloween Concert” at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume.
The NOVA Alexandria Band will play a selection of music from various composers, including “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg, “Graceful Ghost Rag” by William Bolcom, “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!” by Eric Whitacre, and “Hammersmith, Op. 52: Prelude and Scherzo” by Gustav Holst.
The band includes both NOVA students and community members. Lisa C. Eckstein, a music instructor at NOVA-Alexandria, will direct the band.

Ghost & Graveyard Special Halloween Tour
Community Event !!!

For one night only, Alexandria Colonial Tours will end its special Halloween tour in the very room where one of Alexandria’s most mysterious women became a ghost. Weave your way through some of Alexandria’s most haunted locations hearing tales of this historic city’s past and end in the bedroom of the “Female Stranger” at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. Tours will run every 15 minutes. Reservations are suggested and tickets can be purchased online or in person. Partial proceeds benefit Gadsby’s Tavern Museum.

John Carlyle 1780 Funeral, Vault Visit and Historical Haunt Tour of Alexandria
Community Event !!!

In the middle of the American Revolution, Death visited Carlyle House during the fall of 1780 and claimed the life of town founder John Carlyle.
On Saturday, October 25th from 6 to 9 pm, step back in time and be a part of this historic funeral as you learn about mourning practices in Revolutionary War America. Visit the candlelit Carlyle House to view the coffin and pay respects to surviving family members. Then, follow your guide into the rarely seen underground vaults to learn more about spirits and legends of the 18th-century. Return to Carlyle House at 9pm to join a funeral procession to the Old Presbyterian Meeting House where a short 18th-century benediction and blessing will be held followed by a mock internment at John Carlyle’s lantern-lit grave in the cemetery.
