RIEANN SPENCE-GALE

ASSISTANT DEAN OF ACCOUNTING AND

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT

ALEXANDRIA CAMPUS

Rieann Spence-GaleI started teaching at the Alexandria Campus of NOVA in March 1984.  I was (young!) in my late 20’s, single, and ready for a new career.  I had been working in the business field since I graduated from college in the areas of banking, retail management, and training.  I brought all that experience to my classes, along with my years of teaching aerobic classes, which meant I was already comfortable being in front of a group.

I added two Master’s degrees to my resume while teaching here. Both added to my knowledge base and allowed me, over the years, to be promoted to the rank of full Professor.  I took on the role of an Assistant Dean starting in 2000, and I am now responsible for managing seven programs, including the large programs of Accounting and Business Administration/Management.

I also met my husband here, and we now have two grown daughters.  We travel a great deal—really, every chance we get—and I see that as an opportunity to learn more and to recharge the batteries.

As a teen, I swore I would never be a teacher!  Both my parents were teachers (elementary school level mostly) and I just knew I did not want to do that!  However, once I started running training programs (being the trainer), and then teaching aerobics classes, I realized I actually liked teaching.  Now I don’t teach little kids, so that is different, but I this is now my 30th year of teaching at NOVA.

ART HISTORY PROFESSOR

ALEXANDRIA CAMPUS

 IMG_20130910_203432_010

I guess you can say I love to teach!   In addition to being a full-time instructor of Art History, I teach cardio kickboxing part-time for a local TKD studio and for Fairfax County Parks and Rec.

I started kickboxing 16 years ago and fell in love with it; I then decided to become a certified fitness instructor soon after the birth of my son in 2001.  I did my certification through AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and started teaching kickboxing and then moved on to teach Boot Camp, Pilates, weight training, and Core classes, teaching part-time for facilities in the Northern Virginia area.

Currently, I teach kickboxing for Jhoon Rhee and have a fantastic group of students.  For me, there is nothing better to relieve stress then to punch a heavy bag and get a good sweat.  Exercise is so important for both the mind and the body – you feel better, sleep better, and have more energy and endurance, not to mention all the additional health benefits.  So students and staff, take time out to make exercise part of your daily routine.

Green Apple Day

Green Apple logo

Meet at 10am on 9/27 outside the Bisdorf cafeteria to participate in the US Green Building Council’s nationwide initiative to increase environmental sustainability on K-12, college, and university campuses.  For NOVA Alexandria’s Green Apple Day of Service, we will cut lengths of bamboo to make a fence for our new campus garden (coming spring 2014).  Bring labeled gardening tools if you have them.  We will have several sets of gloves, loppers, and pruners for your use.  Help bring NOVA towards environmental sustainability and get a nice line on your resume!  Everyone is welcome to participate.
