NOVA Reads & Eats

A group of enthusiastic readers attended the library’s monthly Book Chat on February 26.  Some people took a chance on a “Blind date with a book,” while others just chatted or experimented with creative concoctions at the Hot Chocolate Bar provided by Student Activities.

Our next no-stress Book Chat is Tuesday, March 26 at 2:00 in the library. Food theme is TBD but be sure to come in and join us.  You’ve got a month and a half to finish 6 books and submit your completed passport for the drawing to win one of three top of the line Kindles.

Library Technology Highlight: Laptop Kiosks

Do you hate lugging your computer all the way from home? Does your laptop’s battery die in the middle of class? Or maybe your laptop crashed entirely and you can’t get a new one right now? The Annandale Campus Library’s got you covered! Borrow a laptop for 4 hours for free from the kiosks in the Library Lobby (CG 3rd Floor)! All you need is an active NOVACard and your MyNOVA username and password.

The kiosks are stored outside the library, so you can borrow one even when the library isn’t open. Kiosk hours are Mon-Thurs 7am to 10pm and Fri-Sat 7am to 7pm. The library offers 36 Dell laptops running Windows 10 and 6 MacBooks running Mojave. All laptops have Office 2016 installed and are set up to wipe all of your information once you return the laptop to the kiosk. (Note: Overdue laptops result in a $4 fee for every hour or part of an hour that the laptop is overdue. Fines can be paid at the Circulation Desk.)

Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China and other Asian countries. Since it is based on the Lunar calendar, there is no set date for Chinese New Year. It occurs on February 5th this year and it is the Year of the Pig according to the Chinese Zodiac. People celebrate new beginnings and fresh starts with special food, fireworks, and a variety of festivals.

If you want to get a feel of what the celebrations are like, please check out the link here to see where the celebrations take place in D.C.  You can also stop by the Annandale Campus Library to check out some books and DVDs to better understand Chinese culture and people. Have a Happy Chinese New Year!

NOVA Reads 2018 – 2019

On November 27th, the Annandale Campus Library and Annandale Student Life launched NOVA Reads, a reading challenge that aims to nurture a culture of pleasure reading on campus. Over forty students, staff, and faculty attended the kickoff party in the library.

The challenge is simple: read books from six different categories (or more) by May 2, 2019. Participants select their own titles to fulfill the challenge categories.
Students who turn in a completed challenge sheet/form/passport by May 2, 2019 will be entered into a grand prize drawing. All students, staff, and faculty are invited to discuss their choices and find new recommendations during monthly book chats in the library. Meetings will take place on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 2:00 PM, beginning January 22nd. Registration will continue through the rest of the semester.

Visit http://libguides.nvcc.edu/ANRead for more information, and to view book recommendations in each challenge category.  Or stop by the library!

Student Organization Book Display: SGA!

This semester, the Annandale Campus Library is working with student organizations to create book displays, showcasing topics relevant to our own campus community. Last month, Dreamers Empowered offered book recommendations on issues surrounding undocumented immigrants. This month’s display comes from the Annandale Student Government Association!

What we do:
“The Student Government Association (SGA) is a permanent standing entity which acts as the liaison between the student body and the campus administration. Our mission is to promote awareness of campus issues, foster a sense of health and well-being, and recognize student excellence by maintaining an open dialogue between students, faculty, and administration. Our vision is to empower the NOVA students to make the most of their college experience.”

Why we want you to read these books:
“The books we chose show leadership, strength, and what our Student Government strives to be. We are a community college student government that tries to make the campus better for all NOVA students. We show leadership in all our work and many of our books  show different sides of leadership, critical thinking, working with others, and cultural understanding.”

A few of the books we chose:

Redesigning America’s Community Colleges – Thomas R. Bailey

Start with Why – Simon Sinek

The Art of War – Sun Tzu

The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg

My Beloved World – Sonia Sotomayor

To check out more recommendations, come visit the SGA’s book display in the Annandale Library, CG 3rd floor!
