Washington National Cathedral Summer Horticulture Internship

3 Horticulture Internships Available Summer, Full-time.

About:

The Washington National Cathedral, along with St. Albans School, National Cathedral School, and Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary School, is located on a campus of 57 acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the nation’s Capital. This internship program provides instruction and hands-on gardening experience. Under the direction of the horticulture staff, interns will participate in the installation, maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the Bishop’s Garden and the Cathedral grounds. Areas of emphasis include ornamental herb garden, herbaceous perennial borders, a hybrid-tea rose garden, a 5-acre native woodland, and a classroom vegetable garden. Proper horticulture techniques will be emphasized, including weeding, staking, pruning, watering, plant identification, and using IPM methods of insect and disease control.

Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in horticulture, landscape maintenance, or a
    related field.
  • Applicants must be able to work outside in inclement weather such as rain and extreme heat, must be able to perform physical work including bending, stooping, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time, must be able to lift, carry, and push at least 30 lbs.

Compensation:

  • Housing is not provided and there is no
    housing allowance.
  • $15.20/hour

Internship time period:

  • Internship is 12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates. May through August preferred.
  • Interns will work Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. To enhance the educational experience, interns will visit public gardens in the surrounding Metro DC area.

Earth Sangha Native Plant Conservation Internship

Full-Season 2022 Native Plant Conservation Internship (TWO OPENINGS!!)

Summary:

Assist in the day-to-day operations of the region’s only exclusively local ecotype native plant nursery. Learn about Northern Virginia’s native flora, horticultural skills, and become part of a grassroots effort to conserve and restore our native plants and their habitats.

Duties:

  • Assist in the supervision of nursery volunteers of all ages and backgrounds

  • Receive training on basic day-to-day nursery operations in order to independently complete tasks including: identification of native plants, watering, sowing seed, making divisions, repotting, identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies, basic maintenance tasks, and cleaning/organization tasks.

  • Assist with other operations at the Wild Plant Nursery, as necessary

  • Opportunities for field work at other sites throughout the region including plant identification, seed collection, and invasive plant removals

Qualifications:

  • Reliable transportation to and from Wild Plant Nursery (Franconia Park, Springfield)

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Interest in native plants and their conservation

  • Be able to work outdoors for extended periods of time

  • Be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects, bending, kneeling or stooping, or other manual labor tasks

  • Relevant education or job experience a plus, but not necessary

  • Our “full season” internships are seasonal positions, limited to a ~36 week term running March through November with a schedule of about 20 hours a week.

  • Internship positions pay $16 an hour. Internship positions do not qualify for benefits.

Casey Tress + Garden Club of America (Urban Forestry Fellowship)

About:

  • The Garden Club of America: Founded in 1913, The Garden Club of America is a nonprofit organization comprised of 200 member clubs and approximately 18,000 club members throughout the United States. To promote greater understanding of the interdependence of horticulture, environmental protection, and community involvement, GCA offers 29 different merit-based scholarships and annually awards over $300,000.
  • Casey Trees: Casey Trees is a non-profit organization established in 2001 to restore, enhance and protect the tree canopy of Washington, DC. The organization works with others to plant and care for trees and promotes the use of green infrastructure of environmentally friendly and sustainable development.

Eligibility:

Open to graduate or advanced undergraduate students that are studying urban forestry, environmental studies, horticulture, forestry, or related courses of study with a special interest in the urban forest. Students must be enrolled during the academic year following the award decision. Eligibility is open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in a U.S. – based institution.

Provisions:

Funds one or more students annually at $7,500 for study and research that will advance the knowledge of urban forestry and increase the number of scientists in the field.

Urban Forester I (Fairfax County)

About/General Duties:

Under the supervision of a Forest Conservation Urban Forester III within the Urban Forest Management Division, DPWES, inspects construction sites for compliance with requirements on approved site plans relating to landscaping, screening, tree preservation and vegetation related proffers and development conditions; assists in final bond and escrow release inspections and under direction prepares needed deficiency lists, correspondence and project documentation; participates in on-site conferences and preconstruction meetings held on construction sites to resolve issues and ensure contractor compliance with county code requirements. Answers technical questions from the public, engineers, architects, landscapers, the development community, and other Fairfax County agencies. Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Tree Conservation Ordinance, (Chapter 122 of the Code) the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance and the Public Facilities Manual.
  • Ability and experience (minimum of 6 months) in performing urban forestry field work including pre-construction meetings, final inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents.
  • Working knowledge of horticulture including trees, shrubs and vines as applied to the urban environment.
  • Certified Arborist Certification (International Society of Arboriculture) within 12 months of hire.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field.

About: With over 12 acres of gardens plus extensive meadows and woodland trails, Chevy Chase Club offers members and their guests’ relief from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The gardens reflect
an estate design philosophy that both respects the Club’s history and fosters interest for generations to come. The Horticulture team strives to consistently exceed the expectations of members and guests. They accomplish this by balancing creativity and innovation with high standards of horticulture, responsible environmental stewardship, and efficient use of resources. Horticulture interns work alongside staff to complete various tasks that enhance and maintain the landscape and gardens. The areas of emphasis include an herb and vegetable garden, rose garden, native woodland gardens, herbaceous perennial borders, two acres of turf and an extensive collection of trees, shrubs, annuals and tropical plants.

Tudor Place Horticulture Intern

About:

Tudor Place Historic House & Garden is seeking an intern to assist with a landscape renovation project. The Horticulture Intern will work with the Gardens & Grounds team to renovate the East Lawn and surrounding ornamental landscape. The Tudor Place Lawn Tennis Club, founded in 1888, held court in this garden room. It
remained a tennis lawn until the 1960s when this space took on an ornamental role. Today, the bones of the garden remain, but the area needs turf and ornamental landscape rejuvenation. The intern will play a critical role in this project from concept to completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing the ornamental planting of the East Lawn
  • Procuring and installing plant material
  • Rejuvenating turfed areas
  • Establishing a maintenance plan
  • Recording acquisitions in IrisBG

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current student or recent graduate of a horticulture, landscape design/architecture, or related program
  • Experience with implementing horticultural best practices in a landscape setting
  • Knowledge of plant material and landscape maintenance techniques with an emphasis on native herbaceous perennials, bulbs, shrubs and trees
  • Knowledge of IrisBG is preferred but not required

Schedule/Logistics:

  • 8-12 hours per week with schedule flexibility. When seeking credit, the total number of hours is dependent on the credit requirements of the student’s academic institution

Professional Grounds Management Society Scholarship

Requirements:

1. Applicant must be a resident of MD, VA, or DC
2. Applicant must be a current student of horticulture or a related field.
3. Applicant must be at least in their first year of college or may be recently graduated from high
school (within the calendar year).
4. Applicant must be sponsored by a PGMS member.

What the scholarship selection committee looks for:

  • An active student with solid grades,
  • Past or current employment in the green industry
  • Involvement in the industry with apprentice or professional organizations, such as FFA, 4H,state or county programs,
  • Civic projects and outreach programs.
  • The committee also looks for any personal development classes and any involvement in sports or
    clubs.
