February 12 – Schlesinger Center Forum Gallery

February 25 – ONGOING – Alexandria NOVA Library.

Organizers: Schlesinger Center Gallery Director – Mary Welch Higgins

Alexandria NOVA Reference Specialist – Michelle Davis Jerney, Paul Chapman – Collection Development Librarian

NOVA Art Professors: Professor Stacy Slaten and Matt Pinney

The Alexandria NOVA Library and The Schlesinger Center Art Galleries partnered on a NOVA and GMU Student Art Show Pop-Up. The Pop-Up showcased student work that was inspired by the Fisher Gallery exhibit – Global Narratives and the Al-Mutannabi Street Starts Here DC 2016 cultural and book arts festival. The work in the Pop Up was done by art students from the Alexandria and Manassas NOVA campuses as well as students from George Mason. At the Schlesinger Center on February 12th, the one night exhibit provided students the opportunity to display their work in conjunction with the local area professional working artists exhibiting in Global Narratives. After the artists reception, the NOVA Alexandria  library installed the Al-Mutannabi Student Pop-Up exhibit  until March 11th alongside books about the Art of the book. Akosua Adoma Owusu | Triple Consciousness

Akosua Adoma Owusu is a Ghanaian/American artist who once taught documentary video at Nova. Internationally recognized for her avant-garde work by Art Forum, Indiewire, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Berlinale World Cinema Fund, she is a current Guggenheim Fellow.

“Her work addresses the collision of identities, where the African immigrant located in the United States has a triple consciousness. Owusu interprets Du Bois’ notion of double consciousness and creates a third identity or consciousness, representing the diverse consciousness of women and African immigrants interacting in African, white American, and black American culture.”

Fulbright Presentation | teaching Film in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia

Dear Alexandria Village,

I am writing to invite you to a presentation I am giving on my recent Fulbright Specialist Program; teaching Film Studies in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

I am giving this presentation, in order to encourage colleagues to apply for either the Fulbright Specialist program or the research program, depending on how much time you can devote.

Date: Tuesday, 1 March 2016
Time: 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Bisdorf Building | AA-158
Contact: Lucy Gebre-Egziabher | lgebre@nvcc.edu

If I could inspire one colleague to apply and go teach in a developing country, I will have done my job! Whether it is a short term program or a yearlong, we can make such a difference in parts of the world where education is not necessarily a given to all.

Light refreshments that will be served. We hope to see you there!
