BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

 

On February 25 more than 150 students participated in the 2014 Black History Month Celebration in Schlesinger Concert Hall. Written and directed by Dr. Mark Whitmire (AL), the event involved actors, dancers, 100 singers, jazz musicians, plus faculty members Dr. Kate Al-Shamma, Dr. Joe Windham and John Kocur, as well as Liberal Arts Dean Jimmie McClellan.

LANGUAGE STUDIES AND CULTURAL EXPLORATION

May 17 to June 22014

Morning language classes for beginners and those with background

Travel and Excursions in Tianjing, Beijing, Wuyishan, Xiamen, Nanjing and Shanghai

image001 (4)This study abroad program consists of 17-days in China – 6-days in Tianjin where the classroom portion of our intensive language courses will take place and 11-days of cultural exploration in five cities and the continuation of the two intensive language courses with focus on structured practice and application of what our students learned in real life communicative situations with native speakers.

Students will be in intensive language classes 4-hours in the morning in the classrooms and 2.5 hours in the afternoon during cultural classes and cultural excursions as well as one-on-one practice with Chinese college students and the instructor in real life situations and in the evening hours.

The program, open to ALL NOVA students and people from the community, will take place in two stages.  Participants may elect to join us for both of the intensive language study and the cultural exploration programs (5/17 to 6/2/2014) or just the cultural exploration programs (5/22 to 6/2/2014).

Application deadline will be on Wednesday, 5 March 2014

2014 CHILDREN’S CONCERT | Thursday, 6 March 2014

NOVA-Alexandria to host Children’s Concert Students to take center stage during performance

The NOVA Alexandria Band and the John Adams Elementary Orff Ensemble will perform a variety of musical selections as part of the Children’s Concert. The concert reflects the Alexandria Campus’s commitment to its community and is also a celebration of music education in the city’s local schools.image001 (4)

Among the selections include “The Elephant and the Flea,” “Saxophobia,” “The Whistler and his Dog,”and “Largo al Factotum,” from the opera “The Barber of Seville.”  The evening will include a recognition ceremony for student finalists from the Alexandria City Public Schools in the visual and performing arts categories of the National PTA Reflections Programs.

The Grand Finale will include a combined performance by the NOVA Alexandria Band, the John Adams Elementary Orff Ensemble and area elementary and middle school students. The concert is free and open to the public.

Parking is FREE in the Beauregard Street Garage.

In an attempt to prepare faculty and staff at NOVA, the Office of Emergency Management and Planning is offering an “All-Hazards” approach to dealing with emergencies that may affect your classroom or campus.  The discussion will include situations such as fires, terrorist threats, active shooters, and hazardous materials incidents here at the college.

It is HIGHLY recommended that ALL faculty and staff attend this event.
