Northern Virginia Community College is pleased to continue its symbolic initiative of honoring our graduating military and veteran students. Red, White and Blue honor cords will be available for graduating service members for the Commencement Ceremony on May 18th. The cords signify the appreciation NOVA feels toward our military and veteran students for their distinguished service and sacrifice.

Faculty, Staff and Students who are interested in allowing NOVA to honor your service can pick up a cord at any campus Veteran Advisor office or our military installations (For Myer, Fort Belvoir Henderson Hall and Quntico) between April 12thMay 10th.

MARY MARSHALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

MARY MARSHALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Mary Marshall Memorial Scholarship was established by the Arlington County Board in 1994 to honor the memory of Mary Marshall, an outstanding public servant who represented Arlington County for 24 years as a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly.  The scholarships are one reflection of the importance the County places on public service and the development of its future leaders.  The Commission on the Status of Women administers the scholarship program.

Amounts
Annual Scholarships at $1,500 – $2,000 per year. Mary Marshall Memorial Scholarship

Requirements
Attendance at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), any campus
Studies must lead to public service career (for example:  public administration, education, public health, public safety, etc.)
Recipients may re-apply annually and be awarded a maximum of three scholarships, as long as they
remain in good academic standing.

 Eligibility

Must be an Arlington County resident.

Applicants for a full-time scholarship must have graduated from an Arlington County high school (public or private).

Both women and men – of any age – may apply.

How to Apply

The application deadline for the 2014 Mary Marshall Memorial Scholarships is May 1, 2014. To apply, complete and mail/email/fax the application along with the required supporting materials no later than May 1, 2014.

“The Impact of Molecular Biology and Genomics on Medicine” With Dr. Jaira Vasconcellos”

Dr. Jaira Vasconcellos, of the Molecular Medicine Branch, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, NIH

Jaira Vasconcellos has a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Pernambuco, Brazil, and a master’s degree in Genetics from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. She received her Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Campinas, Brazil, with part of her thesis conducted at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Her post-graduate training was performed at the Medical Genetics Department, University of Campinas, and currently at the Molecular Medicine Branch, National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Vasconcellos research interests include molecular and cellular biology of cancer, and the molecular mechanisms regulating fetal hemoglobin.
