Legacy Farms is a 501(c)3 non-profit with gardens on the grounds of Temple Hall Farm Regional Park and Fabbioli Cellars, just outside of  Leesburg. Our neurodiverse team of staff, mentors, and apprentices grow and deliver herbs, flowers, and vegetables to area businesses, CSA customers, and food pantries. The nonprofit offers a vocational training program for neurodivergent individuals ages 16 and up, focused on mentoring job skills, increased self-awareness, and personal development. Legacy Farms is launching a profit-focused flower business based on its two-year track record of delivering a robust floral CSA called Legacy Blooms. The objective of this floral business, over time, will be to generate revenue sufficient to self-fund the nonprofit’s vocational training programs and goals for supporting neurodiversity.

National Capital Area Garden Club- Scholarship Opportunity

Short on cash to pay for your spring semester classes? Instead of dropping your classes, why not consider applying for a scholarship!

National Capital Area Garden Club, Inc. has offered college scholarships since 1972 to students who meet the following three requirements:

  • Majoring in: Horticulture, Botany, City Planning, Conservation, Landscape Design, Plant Pathology, Forestry, Environmental areas or Biology as it relates to the previous subjects.
  • 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Permanent address is within the National Capital Area including: Washington DC, Montgomery and Prince Georges County in Maryland, and Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William Counties in Virginia

High school seniors planning to attend 2 and 4 year colleges, current college students and graduate students are all eligible.

All application materials are due by March 1, 2023. Scholarship requirements and application forms can be found on our website https://ncagardenclubs.org/scholarships/.

The minimum award is $3000. Students reapply each year and there is potential for additional money from our regional and national partners.

Part-Time Gardener- Metro Gardenworks

Are you looking for some part-time work to gain experience or extra cash? Want to work at a NOVA Horticulture Technology Alumni business? If you said yes to either of those statements, then I have the opportunity for you!

NOVA Horticulture Alumni Maraea Harris started her own business called Metro Gardenworks and needs your help as a part-time gardener!

Hours are variable and somewhat seasonal but range from 8-15 hours a week but could be more during the busier spring/summer season. There are fewer hours in winter but unless it is raining or there is snow on the ground, there is still work that can be done. Hours may be able to be tailored around school/child care schedules. Pay is $18/hr with tools and uniform needs provided. You will need to provide transportation to and from the job site. Many sites are in the Reston/Vienna area and others in the DC/Arlington/Alexandria area.

Scholarship- PGMS DC Branch

Do you need some help paying for your classes? Well, there are other options out there than student loans! The DC PGMS, Professional Ground Management Society, has a scholarship offer to students who are pursuing a degree in landscape and grounds management, turf management, irrigation technology, or any closely related field, *hint hint nudge nudge* Horticulture.

If you’re interested in applying for this scholarship opportunity, the scholarship application deadline is March 1st. In order to apply for the scholarship, fill out the form below, and attach a cover letter that includes an introduction, and educational and professional goals. and intent for use of the funds. Also attached to the application should be a current resume with relevant awards or certificates, a college transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a letter from the PGMS member who is sponsoring the applicant (This would be Sue Dickson).

Winning the scholarship award not only gives you money to go toward your education but also includes a complimentary 1-year membership to the PGMS, as well as paid admission to two of their events, The Green Industry Seminar and the Green Industry Feild Day.
