FAQs For Tutoring

How much does the tutoring appointment cost?
The tutoring appointments are FREE. You may have two (2) appointments per week, per subject. Stop by the center during in person services hours, or go to www.nvcc.edu/tutoring to schedule your own time and day for a 50-minute appointment!

How can I apply to become a tutor?
To become a tutor you must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, be a NOVA student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, and receive an “A” or “B” in the courses that you would like to tutor. If you meet all of the requirements, then you must complete our application. For more information please email ASC@nvcc.edu.

I’ve scheduled an appointment, what’s next?
After you’ve scheduled an appointment, please look for a confirmation email. For remote services, please look for your Zoom link for your appointment in the confirmation email. Please arrive to your Zoom a few minutes early to allow time for check-in. If you have questions, contact us at ASC@nvcc.edu or calling 703-845-6363.

How can I have a successful tutoring experience?
Come prepared to tutoring sessions. This includes bringing syllabi, textbooks, notes or other materials that would be beneficial to aiding in the tutoring session. (Tutors will not provide any of these materials.)
Attempt to solve the problems on your own before your appointment. Bringing a list of questions or problems to be worked out often leads to a more productive tutoring session.
Be respectful of the tutor’s time and be responsible in keeping track of your schedule.
Be on time for tutoring sessions.
Although it may be a very productive session, sometimes not all of the goals of the session may be met. Please return to the front desk and schedule a follow up appointment, if needed.

Will I always see the same tutor?
Maybe.
Tutors are schedule based upon the course being requested and the best available time. We work hard to best accommodate your schedule and the availability of our tutors. If you have worked with a tutor and would like to see the same tutor again, we will do the best we can to accommodate your request. If you would like to try another tutor, this is also a possibility.
Remember, your tutors are also your classmates and peers. They are also in classes and may be working other jobs. Don’t be afraid to try out a few tutors to see if you work well with multiple tutors.

How do I cancel a tutoring appointment?
You may cancel an existing tutoring appointment by calling our office at 703-845-6363, emailing ASC@nvcc.edu, or by visiting our center and speaking with a member of our front desk team. You may also go to www.nvcc.edu/tutoring to cancel your own appointment. Please allow 24 hours if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

If you do not show up for the appointment, these are considered a “No Show.” After two “No Shows,” your privileges will be restricted until you have met with a Learning Specialist.
