Our focus is to promote women’s health and empowerment across the College while supporting families in our area! Please join our call to action! Our goal is to raise $1,000.00 which will provide 1 scholarship for 1 student for 1 year. We have already completed 52% of that goal! We can do this NOVA!

Sips of Inspiration: “Women Supporting Women Through the NOVA Women’s Network”

Date/Time: Friday, September 17th 2021 from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Purpose: The past year and a half has been a doozy and as we return to our college locations, this is NOT business as usual. In this Sips of Inspiration event, we will discuss the current times and the new and sustained changes around us, but most importantly we will discuss how, through this Network, we can support one another. There will be an opportunity to learn more about the NWN Board and how we are working together to support our community of women. We want to hear from you and your needs. We will specifically acknowledge the impacts of the pandemic and its disproportionate impact on women. You will then be given the opportunity to connect with others in small groups to discuss some hot topic items and developing strategies for supporting one another as we journey into another academic year.
Scope: A networking opportunity will occur in break out rooms of your selection and willingness to share or just listen. Topics include:
i. What has been the cost of COVID
ii. This is What I have learned/gained
iii. This is What I have lost/experienced
iv. Anonymous (an opportunity to remove your name and picture              to be able to talk and share freely about the impacts on you)
Then we will return to our whole group connection. What will determine what WE need and how WE can support one another. This is an amazing Network of women with a wide range of knowledge, skills and abilities! Together we will advocate, empower and support one another.
Sips: Come as you are with your beverage of choice.
Recording: Presentation will NOT be recorded

Summer Book Club!

Please join us for the first NWN Summer Book Club!

This summer the NWN Advisory Board will be hosting a book discussion and we welcome you to join us in this program! Mirroring our events in the spring semester, this program will focus on opportunities to connect. The overarching goal of the NWN is to create a space for NOVA Women’s Network to engage, connect and support one another.

We invite you to join us for the low pressure reading program outlined below. We have selected a book and program format that allows engagement even if you do not follow the suggested reading schedule.

Program Overview: Again, this is a very low key and chill program:

  • Book Selection: Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men. Our library owns an unlimited, simultaneous user e-book, so everyone has access to the ebook. There are print copies at campus libraries and an audio version available for checkout through VCCS Overdrive (single user copy). The book is very reasonably priced with a variety of formats from Amazon and other retailers.
  • Book Description: Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias, in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women, diving into women’s lives at home, the workplace, the public square, the doctor’s office, and more. Built on hundreds of studies in the US, the UK, and around the world, and written with energy, wit, and sparkling intelligence, this is a groundbreaking, unforgettable exposé that will change the way you look at the world.
  • Great Articles about the book:
  • Program Schedule: Invisible Women’s Wednesday Book Club – zoom discussion session held each week on Wednesday at 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Wednesday, June 23rd: Introduction, Part 1 and Part 2
    • Wednesday, July 21st: Part 3 & 4
    • Wednesday, August 11th: Part 5 & 6 and Afterward
