Objectives
- Explain the basis of Brownian movement
- Describe the movement of solutes by diffusions
- Explain how concentration, molecular weight, and temperature affect the rate of diffusion.
- Explain the movement of water by osmosis.
- Explain the movement of water among isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions and their affect on cells (plant and animal).
Materials
- petri dishes embedded with agar
- Straws
- 0.1 M, 0.01 M, 0.001 M potassium permanganate
- incubator (set to 37 degrees Celsius)
- refrigerator (set to 4 degrees Celsius)
- 0.9% salt solution, 0% salt solution, 20% salt solution
- potato and potato corer
- Electronic scale
- Timer
- Slides and cover slips
- Compound Light Microscope capable of 400X magnification
- Elodea leaves
- Blood cells
