In lab today you will be reviewing how to use a compound microscope and demonstrate proper use and care for the microscope.

Objectives

  1. Identify and define the parts of a microscope. 
  2. Explain and apply the concept of depth of field. 
  3. Describe and demonstrate proper handling and care of the microscope. 
  4. Describe and demonstrate proper focusing techniques and light adjustments at all magnifications. 
  5. Describe changes in the field of view when using the different objective lenses. 
  6. Correctly store the microscope. 

Materials needed

  • microscope (one per student) 
  • labels of microscope parts
  • string slide 
  • lens paper 
  • dropper bottle of isopropyl alcohol 
  • dropper bottle of methylene blue 
  • lens paper 
  • peripheral nerve slide 
  • toothpick
