Objectives

  • Explain the basis of Brownian movement
  • Describe the movement of solutes by diffusions
  • Explain how concentration, molecular weight, and temperature affect the rate of diffusion.
  • Explain the movement of water by osmosis.
  • Explain the movement of water among isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions and their affect on cells (plant and animal).

  • petri dishes embedded with agar
  • Straws
  • 0.1 M, 0.01 M, 0.001 M potassium permanganate
  • incubator (set to 37 degrees Celsius)
  • refrigerator (set to 4 degrees Celsius)
  • 0.9% salt solution, 0% salt solution, 20% salt solution
  • potato and potato corer
  • Electronic scale
  • Timer
  • Slides and cover slips
  • Compound Light Microscope capable of 400X magnification
  • Elodea leaves
  • Blood cells
