Ch. 09 Thinking

Focus on the thinking sections of the chapter.

What is cognition?

Describe and give examples of three theories of how people make cognitive categories:

  1. Family resemblance
  2. Prototypes
  3. Exemplars

When it comes to making judgments and decisions, we often use heuristics or have biases. Describe and be able to give/recognize examples of these biases/heuristics:

  • Using probabilities vs. frequencies
  • The availability bias
  • The conjunction fallacy
  • The representativeness heuristic
  • Framing effects
  • The sunk-cost fallacy
  • The optimism bias
  • Belief perseverance
  • Confirmation bias
