Chapter 11

What do each of these terms mean: ANOVA, factor, level, condition, between-subjects, within-subjects

When do you use a one-way ANOVA? What are the two kinds of one-way ANOVAs? Can you provide an example of each?

What is the null hypothesis in a one-way ANOVA? What is the alternative/research hypothesis?

What is the general logic of a oneway ANOVA? Be able to understand comparing the variance within groups to the variance between groups.

What is the experiment-wise error rate? How does it compare to a Type I error?

Why don’t we just do multiple t-tests?

Can you read an SPSS output table to tell whether F is significant?

What does it mean when you get a significant F?

When do we use post-hoc tests? Why do we use post-hoc tests? What are the three  kinds of post-hoc tests that we discussed using in SPSS and when do we use each one specifically?

Can you interpret the results of the experiment, including the main effect (the significance of F) and the post-hoc analyses?

What is “effect size”? Can you use the formula for R2/ η2 ? What does this term tell us?

How do we maximize the power in an experiment?

Be able to perform and interpret any SPSS procedures that we do for this chapter.
